“She enjoys rain for its wetness, winter for its cold, summer for its
heat. She loves rainbows as much for fading as for their brilliance. It
is easy for her, she opens her heart and accepts everything.”
In this 4th day of the 3rd Annual Knitting and Crochet Blog Week, the topic question is, "How does seasonal weather affect your knitting?" Many knitters only knit warm things with wool in the cold weather and cooler things with cotton in the warmer months.
Well, I don't really like knitting with cotton, and I always seem to be cold, so I don't really follow those conventions. I pretty much knit whatever I'm in the mood for, not worrying about the season.
I would say that I am a cold-weather item knitter, though. I love knitting mittens and hats and cowls

But I also love knitting shawls. Are those seasonal? I guess if I knit them in wool, they'd be better suited for cooler weather. But like I always have a sock going, I always have a shawl going, too.

The nice thing about knitting these items is that you can pretty much knit them year round. Inevitably, when I'm knitting one of these "warmers" as I call them or give one away, another person decides he or she wants one. That works for me. Not only do people like my knitting enough that that they want something, but now I have an excuse to make it rather then I just want to.
So all seasons are beautiful and all knitting is knitable within those seasons.
Enjoy reading the blog posts, everyone. I've had such a good time reading everyone's take on these topics.

I love the quotation you begin this post with - it's beautiful. Reminds me of that quotation you see on cards "Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass; it's about learning to dance in the rain.". Your projects look fantastic - those shawls! I would love to knit a shawl like these but I know my limitations! But yours are just fabulous. Thank you for sharing them. What fun this week is seeing so many talented people's creations!
Thomasina--no limitations! Those shawls are really pretty easy; it's just a matter of counting your stitches as you go. You can do it! An I love the quote you mentioned, too.
I agree with your sentiments - knitting all year round and only items which one enjoys. I absolutely LOVE your shawls (which are prefect for every season)
Your work is just stunning. I can't get over the shawls. I'm in the midst of my first knitted shawl and am so hopeful it ends up the way it's supposed to. Thanks for sharing!
I love your projects. That's a whole cowl collection! The only problem is figuring out which one to wear. And shawls and socks are totally any season knitting - small and portable or lacy enough to work no matter what the season.
You make a great point, and now I really want to knit a shawl!
I am posting blogs I like that I found through the google searches this week and your's is on today's list :)
Great post! Your shawls are gorgeous! Sometimes I get an itch to knit lace shawls in the summer. Probably be the air conditioner in so many places makes me cold:)
I like your thinking: have someone to make something for, and then you have a real sense of purpose in making (and finishing!!!) it. I think I could live with those rules!!! ;)
Oh, I love the fingerless mitts! They're one of my favourite accessories, both to knit and to wear.
You make a lot of gifts (the mittens and cowls), I can't really handle too many gifts. I'm always scared that they won't be "perfect" and I get all stressed out haha. Maybe next Christmas I will be more confident.
That's a great collection of wee shawls. I agree that there's no need to change knitting habits by season - but I am fortunate not to live in an extreme climate
Sharing such wonderful knitting collection is really fascinating. I could have started knitting to regain my desire to knit again with this great stuff. Knitting is so cool, but something I could not do because I was too busy with work. Anyway, great collection of shawls!
